Preparing your tween for their first period is such a great opportunity for bonding! While it can be hard or awkward to start the different talks parents need to have with their tweens, I’ve found The Care and Keeping of You books by American Girl to be really helpful. There are different editions, the one for Younger Girls says it’s for ages 8-10 and the second book, for Older Girls says it’s for 9-11 year olds. I liked that these books don’t try to be a substitution for parents talking to their daughters. The “Letter to You” in the front of the book reminds them their parents have been there for them since they were born and this book can help give them information to use to start conversations or ask questions with their parents. The first book covers deodorant, sunscreen, bras, nutrition, periods and more. The second book covers pimples, hormones, body hair, mental health and lots more. As your little girl is getting closer to the having her period for the first time, it’s the perfect time to put together a “First Period Kit” with your tween.
What’s a First Period Kit?
It’s exactly what it sounds like! A kit for their first (and every other…) period. We started by DIYing a cosmetic bag, then we shopped to fill it. As you’re shopping for the items, you can explain why you find each item important. As you’re packing the bag, you can open the items and show how they’re used. The more you talk about what to expect with your daughter, the more you can help ease the worry or stress of the unknown. Keeping this kit in their backpack at school can help them to feel prepared!
The items I found important to include:
- period underwear
- OR pads and clean underwear
- wipes
- hand sanitizer
- clean shorts/pants
- a few “disposable diaper bags” for dirty clothes
