It’s not hard to tell just by looking at me that I have thin hair and on top of that, it’s fine! My entire life, any time I’ve found an inspiration picture for a haircut, the stylist always reminds me mine won’t look quite like that since it isn’t nearly as thick. While there are pros to having thin hair (it takes 10 mins to blow dry AND style it, less shampoo and conditioner, less expensive to get it colored, etc.) the major con is that no hair styles really look as cute when you don’t have a ton of hair, especially braids.
The good news is I have learned how to fake a big braid even with thin hair like mine. The easiest way, of course, is to use clip-in hair extensions towards the front of your face where you’ll be braiding. But if you want to do it with your natural hair, here’s how:
1| Give your hair some texture with dry shampoo (even if it’s clean). Braids work best on dirty hair, but sometimes washing, drying and styling my hair is too much for me, so I just want to braid it when it’s clean. So whether my hair is on day 7 or date 1, I start with dry shampoo.
2| Tease the hair you’ll use in your braid. Teasing it give the hair the illusion of looking larger than it is. So seriously, tease it it, tease it, TEASE IT.
3| When braiding, braid the hair under (commonly called a Dutch braid) to make your braid look larger. Finish your braid with a clear elastic.
4| The MOST important part: Pull your braid apart (gently) to make it appear larger.
That’s it! It’s easy once you know what to do.
