It’s that time of year again… when parents drive themselves crazy over gifts. I love to surprise my kiddos with gifts throughout the year, which means they really don’t need a ton come Christmas time. Our home is already packed full of the latest toys.

Over the past few years we have made online lists (basically registries) for the kids for Christmas and their birthdays because I am sick of the piles of toys that are only played with for a week or two. I want meaningful toys that will last and that will keep their attention. But I don’t only want this for my kids. When we are giving gifts I want the same thing! I don’t want to buy something that’s going to get broken immediately or donated in a month.

Last year was our first Christmas with the “four gift” Christmas. We pick an item from each of the four categories: Want, Need, Wear and Read, for each kiddo. Four is a great number, when you set four gifts in front of your child, they’ll still be excited. But it’s not so many that it’s overwhelming. They’ll remember each gift and will be able to thoughtfully process each as they open them. More than four and they’re just ripping open paper, until they’ve opened them all.

Okay, so those are my Want, Need, Wear and Read picks for preschool girls. What do you think?

How many gifts do you give to each of your children? Do you think four is too little? I’d love to hear what works for your family.
