redecorating: babyproofing the living room

Living Room After

Like lots of people, I LOVE redecorating. Out with the old and in with the new just brings me all kinds of happy. And while I don’t necessarily feel like our living room is completely finished, it’s definitely getting there. We had all of the oak trim in our house painted white this spring and it’s definitely helped brighten up the place. But our living room was still dark, thanks to the heavy curtains and the dark brown furniture. I needed to brighten up the place.Behold, the befores:

With a new baby, there was lots of babyproofing to do again. Our mission:
1 | couch covers to protect them from baby spit up and toddler spills.
2 | cordless blinds.
3 | organization for more (and more and more) toys.

We ordered these couch covers because our poor couch has definitely taken a beating. There’s no point in getting new couches at this point in life, so the next best thing was (machine washable!) couch covers. They’re super easy to put on and I love that we can just throw them in the washer and dryer if they get dirty. They are somewhat sensitive to velcro, but I’d rather these end up gross than our actual couch.

I had been wanting new curtains and cordless blinds for years now. Traditional cord blinds are not ideal for babies and small children, as the cords are strangulation hazards. As much anxiety as I have over keeping our children safe – we have had to keep the blinds up all times and the cords up and away from Blaire. It’s nice to have blinds we can put up and down! These were very easy to install. Jason had them both up in about 30 minutes. And we were able to go with some pretty, sheer curtains, now that we can have our blinds down again. They let in more natural light and are longer than the ones we had before. I think they make a HUGE difference.

Yay for more organization! We use these cubes as a TV stand and store Blaire’s toys in them, as well as DVDs. I like that we can fit a ton in them, but the clutter is out of sight. We also decided to upgrade to a much larger coffee table. I love that we can fit puzzles and books underneath it, yet it still looks clean and organized.

I’d still REALLY love to paint this room, but something about having to deal with painting a room with such giant ceilings makes my husband cringe. So I am more than happy with this for now.

I love that makes it easy to stay true to my style (for a GREAT price) while keeping our home functional during this messy stage of life. What are your favorite ways to keep your home safe & stylish with little ones around?
